Finding an Air Conditioning Contractor: Four Questions to Ask

Trust

With March upon us, it’s the perfect time to start thinking about upgrading your air conditioner. But how do you find an HVAC contractor you can trust?

As you search for a new air conditioning contractor to install your new system, ask these four questions of any candidate you’re considering:

  1. Can you provide a license number and proof of insurance? License numbers are issued by the state in which a contractor operates. Also ask for proof of liability insurance and workman’s compensation, otherwise you could be liable for damage caused while working inside your home.
  2. How long have you been an HVAC contractor? How do you get to be an excellent contractor? Experience and lots of training! Look for candidates with an abundance of both. Give preference to candidates that are listed in Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) and the North American Technician Excellence (NATE) group.
  3. Can you provide references? Recommendations from past clients can ease your mind when working with a contractor for the first time. If your contractor can’t provide references, it’s probably best to move on. You can also ask trusted friends, family, and neighbors for HVAC contractor recommendations.
  4. Can I get it in writing? Ask for everything in writing – from the estimate to warrantees on contractor plans. You’ll also want to remind your contractor of warrantees already in place on your equipment so he doesn’t accidentally void them while doing your installation!

Asking these questions will increase your chances of finding an honest, dependable pro – and to avoid poor workmanship and contractor scams.
