A heat pump system typically consists of an indoor air handler and an outdoor unit that looks like an outside A/C unit on a concrete slab—but is referred to as a heat pump. A compressor circulates refrigerant that absorbs and releases heat as it travels between the two units.
Depending upon the season, a heat pump moves warm air from where it is needed or not needed. When it is warm outside, it removes heat from the air inside your home. When it is cold outside, heat energy is still present, and a heat pump extracts this heat and transfers it into your home.
Because it moves rather than generates heat, this system can provide up to four times the amount of energy it consumes. Powered by electricity, it also allows you to save substantially on fuel consumption. Most suited for use in moderate climates, a supplemental heating source may be needed for colder winters.
